Songming (G) – Based upon prior foundation on herbal medicine preservation, the project facilitated local community to extend their traditional knowledge to ecological animal raising and ecological farming. Regular evening classes on traditional culture (such as Miao literacy, local history, etc) are held for young villagers to strengthen their cultural identity. Viillagers are mobilized to explore with external expert possible ways for low-tech and low-input domestic-water and solid-waste management.
Deqin (B) – Supported community efforts to revive interests and knowledge on traditional cultural values and practices, such as Tibetan language, folk music, folklores, and the importance of protecting sacred mountains, underpinned by the cultural perspective on a harmonious relationship between human and nature. Also, two other villages are supported to conduct community-led research on ethnic-housing. After a series of training workshops and exchanges with external experts, local villagers developed their own experimental plans (ways to reduce layers of wood to be used for roof-construction) and training plans (wood craving skills classes provided for local carpenters).
Shuangjiang (C), Weishan (H), Pu’er (E) – Consolidated capacity of village-based committees on children education in 3 project villages. A network of 180 family-ed volunteers joint by teachers generate local discussion and mobilize local resources on children’s formal and informal education. Training workshops on social analysis, family education, school planning and school-based curriculum development have been provided for committee members. In 2007, 7 training-of-trainers workshop for family-education were conducted. More than 50 trainers and 200 community-based facilitators were trained with skills and knowledge for family education. Besides, a comic health-education book targeting primary students was developed in March 2008 for enhancing students’ hygiene and nutrition. School-based curriculum development in 3 project schools was also started in 2007. Over 100 students actively co-worked with parents, teachers and community members for developing curriculum activities that respect local culture and promote love to home village and the nature.
Menghai, Xishuangbanna (D) – Consolidated capacity of 3 villagers groups (family heads, women and youths) in 2 project villages to reduce young people’s dependency of cross-border labour migration. Three main activities were supported: 1) Promoted mutual-help spirits in local communities; 2) Explored possibilities of alternative livelihoods (such as vegetable farming for local consumption, ecological tea growing for generating funds for communal events of women group, etc); and 3) Organized cultural events for increasing young villagers’ cultural identity.
Shiping (F) – Conducted a series of workshops and educational activities to raise awareness of children, farmers and local agriculture technicians of potential dangers of pesticide uses, and a group of local farmers have converted into ecological farming for two years. Established local groups of volunteers for promoting community-based health education and village-clinic monitoring; and supported bio-gas tank construction and drinking-water system repairing for improving villages’ environmental health. Raised villagers’ awareness of the intricate linkage between ecological and human health; and facilitated the setting up of waste segregation system in villages and schools to explore with villagers ways to mitigate harmful impact on the environment.
Tengchong (A) – Co-worked with Tengchong Gaoligongshan National Nature-Reserve Administrative Bureau to facilitate local ranchers and Lisu villagers (total population 240 villagers) to restore culture-and-nature linkage through small grant activities, including folk-music class, Lisu-literacy class, traditional culture research, replanting extinguishing tree species, and collective actions on producing traditional costume. Villagers’ awareness of culture-nature linkage and community solidarity was strengthened
Yuanmou (I) – Co-worked with Kunming Institute of Botany to carry out county-wide and village-based researches for demonstrating environment-health & livelihood linkage. Impacts of intensification of agriculture (such as introducing external high-yielding varieties, mono-cropping of cash crop, uses of chemical fertilizers and pesticide) on ecological health and human health are highlighted
Kunming (O) – Conducted regular post-video-show discussion and reflection forums. 13 videos have been shown and around 170 Kunming residents joined the forum. Discussion on water pollution in Kunming, conservation of traditional varieties, ecological agriculture and agrarian culture, intrinsic values of Spring Festival, etc were generated. |
