Where We Work
Yunnan

The southwestern province of Yunnan is rich in biodiversity and is home to more than 26 different ethnic minorities. Under the market-oriented development model, the natural environment has deteriorated rapidly with serious effects on people’s health. In the wake of the drain of both brains and physical labour force to the cities, the preservation and continuity of good traditional culture and values is being threatened. In Yunnan, PCD continues to promote community eco-health, and helps preserve and develop the culture heritage of different ethnic groups.

Exploring the roots of health and culture

Over the past years, PCD has been working in Shiping County to promote community-based health education. We work with local partners to introduce the concepts and practices of ecological farming and to promote the notion that health and the environment are linked. In the counties of Songming, Mojiang and Chuxiong, emphasis is placed on education and promotion of traditional medicine, and the improvement of the immediate ecological environment of the community. In Yuanmou County, PCD works with research institutes to identify and assess critical linkages between ecological well being and human health.

In Menghai County of the southern prefecture of Xishuangbanna, PCD works with young local facilitators to explore alternative livelihoods strategies. Activities have been organised to enhance the sense of belonging in the community. In Deqin and Tengchong, PCD supports the teaching of Tibetan and Lisu language, traditional song and dance and architecture to cultivate the appreciation and preservation of traditional culture and to restore interconnectedness between culture and nature. In Shuangjiang, Weishan and Ni’er County, PCD promotes community participatory formal and non-formal education, with projects that focus on school-based curriculum reform as well as cultural appreciation. In Kunming, PCD works with local partners to facilitate platforms for exchanges and reflection to raise the awareness of local residents on simple living.

PCD will continue to work on holistic eco-health and cultural reflection programmes in Yunnan. Efforts will be made in exploring alternative economic strategies such as recycling community resources to minimise damage to the environment. Restoration of both community spirit and collaboration mechanisms which enhance mutual support and self-sustainability are other endeavours we plan to undertake in the coming years.
